Fawn in the Park

Summer in Whitehorse just wouldn't be summer without Arts in the Park. Every workday during the lunch hour, live performers play at Lepage Park while office workers, daycare attendees, random passersby, tourists, and anyone else who appreciates music get to listen - for free. In addition to the music, there is always an art demonstration where onlookers can learn more about an artist and their craft.

This summer's final performance was broadcast live on CBC radio and my dear wife, Fawn, was asked to sing a couple of songs. I'm sure she'll post some videos from the show on her own blog, eventually. Until then, here are a few shots from the event.

The paparazzi get ready.

The fans eagerly await.

And here she is (somewhere behind that microphone), ready to wow the crowd! (I'm so proud.)

Yes, dear. You're right, dear.

I have to confess, when I looked at the long, long list of nominees for the "Best Family Blog" category of the Canadian Blog Awards - the category in which my wife was nominated - my first thought was, "Poor dear. She doesn't stand a chance."

I didn't think this because of any deficiencies in her writing; I quite enjoy her writing style.  For obvious reasons, I find her subject matter interesting, though I would be quick to admit that most wouldn't.  I mean, why would anyone want to read about my family?  There are lots of families out there with stories of their own.

I thought she wouldn't stand a chance in the Canadian Blog Awards because Canada is a big country and there are lots and lots of family bloggers.  Out of that long, long list of nominees, I figured there were bound to be a few with huge readerships, famous writers, corporate sponsorships, etc.  Fawn's blog is only a small fish in a big pond, after all.

Today, however, I found out that she made it to the Final Five in her category.

I shouldn't be surprised, come to think of it.  She's always proving me wrong.

Voting for the Final Five is now open!  Can the little fish from the Yukon win "Best Family Blog"?  Vote for Fawnahareo's Place: Life as a Mom in the Yukon today!

The Canadian Blog Awards

Even if I feel left out and sad and dejected because nobody nominated me for the Canadian Blog Awards, I'm going to suck it up because I'm happy that someone nominated my wife in the Best Family Blog category.

Go vote for Fawnahareo's Place:Life as a Mom in the Yukon today!

A bunch of other great northern blogs have been nominated, as well. Vote for them, too!

In limbo.

00:22. New Westminster, BC. My sister-in-law's house.

Fawn: Michael, wake up. ~whimper~
Michael: What's wrong?
Fawn: I've got a pain in my side.
Michael: Is it a contraction?
Fawn: ~whimper. gasp. whimper~ I don't think so. It's on my right side. ~whimper~ It think it might be my appendix.
Michael:  What does it feel like?
Fawn:  It's a dull pain. ~whimper~
Michael: Do you need to go to the hospital?
Fawn: I don't know. ~wince~
Jade stirs.
Michael: Do you need an ambulance?
Fawn: ~whimper~ I don't know. ~whimper~
Michael: Do you need an ambulance?
Fawn: ~whimper~ I don't know.
Michael: Someone needs to stay here with Jade. I'll get Nem to take you to the hospital.
Fawn: ~whimper~ OK. ~whimper~

*knock* *knock* *knock*

Nem: Come in?
Michael: I need you to do me a favour. Fawn's having pains. She needs to go to the hospital. I need to stay with Jade. Can you take her?
Nem: Of course. There's a hospital just up the road. I'll call to see if there's an emergency department.

Michael (returning to Fawn): Are you feeling nauseated?
Fawn: Yes.
Michael: Nem is going to take you to the hospital.
Fawn: ~whimper~
Michael: Do you need an ambulance?
Fawn: ~whimper~
Michael: I'm calling the ambulance.

The ambulance took way too long to arrive. Based on where Fawn showed me the dull pains were coming from, it's not her appendix.

Based on all the questions the ambulance attendants asked, they seemed to think she might be having contractions. The baby is full term, but Fawn was not having contractions. She knows what contractions feel like.

I am worried about the pain my wife is in and what might be going on with Nugget.

Nem followed the ambulance as it drove Fawn to the hospital.

I want to be with my wife. Waiting by the phone is phone is just too hard.

It's 01:10.

Still no call.

Yes. Yes he will be busy.

Google searches for my name and the name of this blog are the most popular queries that lead people to Michael's Meanderings, but searches for "the wood guy", "propane frostbite", "obscene poetry", and "huang long restaurant edmonton" are also quite common.

Over the years, I have had some unusual queries (that I won't get into now), but I received one today that I felt needed a response. The googler asked, "if i name my child michael will he be busy".

I know a lot of Michaels, but I don't know that I would call lazy. Based on my highly advanced statistical methods, I think it's safe to say, "Yes. Yes he will be busy." I don't know if that's the answer the searcher wanted, but at least he/she will be able to make an informed decision the next time they search for an answer to that timeless question.
