The Modern Diet.

I was in the grocery store early this evening when I overheard the following conversation:

Boy: Auntie, what are these?
Auntie: Those are radishes.

It's amazing to think that a 10- or 11-year-old boy has never seen or eaten radishes before, but I guess that's par for the course in the modern diet!

Well in our house we both really dislike asparagus, so I bet my boys will have no clue what it is when they are 10!

Sure they will, because you'll be saying things like "asparagus is disgusting!" (Even though it's really, really good when cooked properly.)

I just noticed your new business, Michael - good luck with it! That's a great-looking boat - I think it was you I saw in Grayling Bay a feww days ago. So many people buy that sort of thing and then seldom use it - nice to see that you're all out so often.

Thanks, Murray. The boats are fantastic. If you saw a boat out a few days ago, it wasn't mine. My last sail for the year was earlier this month The boat is now winterized, ready to go for when the ice comes off the lakes in the spring!

I remember watching a Jamie Oliver show on TV several months ago. He went into a school in the U.S. and asked a class of Grade 3 students to identify a variety of vegetables he had brought with him. The kids could hardly name any of them. I guess I shouldn't have been surprized but I was. Also, we had a young woman staying with us this past summer who grew up near Kingston, Ontario. She looked out at my garden one day and said, "I think this is the first time I've ever seen lettuce growing in the ground." How did we get so far off course??

Well considering that the kids today don't even know how to tie their shoes (velcro) or know the pleasure of hanging up on someone on a "regular" phone, I'm not surprised!! Oh, but radishes are SOOO delicious:( There's still hope for that poor kid!! :)

Love the photographs, Michael!

Yes, I also saw the Jamie Oliver show, and this doesn't surprise me. I keep hoping that our generation will raise our kids in a return-to-the-land kind of way, and that things will change. However, when I say this to people, they always laugh, seeing as we're the minority. They didn't come up with the double down for no reason!
