The ice bridges have officially closed...

Many of the communities in the NWT and a few areas in the Yukon are connected by winter roads and/or ice bridges. Although the end of winter is celebrated, springtime brings with it some special transportation challenges.

This is the season when it's too late to drive on the ice but too early to use a boat. Communities stock up on supplies, sometimes for the half-year before the ice bridges and winter roads are made again. If you get caught on the wrong side of the river in springtime, make sure you're prepared to wait it out until break-up!
