This is not a blog entry about the solstice.

Unlike many northern bloggers who are posting entries about how today is the winter solstice (aka "hump day" and "shortest day of the year"), and about how we're going to start getting more sunlight from now until June 21st, I am not going to write about that. And I'm definitely not going to write about how the official sunrise in Whitehorse was at 10:10 and that the sunset was at 15:48 and that the day was five hours and thirty-eight minutes long.

Instead, I'm going to write that this is the 500th post to Michael's Meanderings since it moved to the Blogger platform from Live Spaces all those years ago.

So, uh, this is the 500th post to Michael's Meanderings since it moved to the Blogger platform from Live Spaces all those years ago. Hurrah! If I can't produce a quality blog, at least I can make it up on volume.

I think I'll celebrate by wishing all of you (in the northern hemisphere, anyway) a Happy Winter Solstice!

Hmm... a suspicious amount of midwinter detail for a post that's not about the solstice! ;)

Why does everyone keep bringing up the solstice! It's not like it doesn't happen every year! ;)

Well, a surprising number of things occur annually and yet still garner much attention.

Christmas, Chanukah, New Year's, Thanksgiving, Easter, Birthdays...

...wouldn't we appreciate these things so much more if they only came every couple of years? :P

Well, February 29th only happens every 4 years and it does get more special treatment than any other calendar day even though nothing really special occurs ... so perhaps you're right.
