Adventures in Grocery Shopping

When I was a young pup, not yet moved out of the den, grocery shopping had a certain adventurous appeal to it. I'd be cruising the aisles thinking, "I'm, like, an adult or something!"

When I was a swinging bachelor in Fort Liard, grocery shopping was an adventure because I'd drive two hours to Fort Nelson and fill up two (and sometimes three) grocery with carts with a month's worth of food for myself. Every trip was fraught with those two burning questions: "Will I buy enough?" and "Can I make it last a month?"

At some point, however, shopping for groceries became boring. Mundane. Annoying, even. I think it was when I moved to Whitehorse - Canada's Northern Big Box Store Capital.

On the weekend, however, something happened that put a little bit of excitement back into my grocery shopping experience. Jade, who normally doesn't like vegetables, started running around the produce section attempting to sample each of the fruits and veggies.

If attempting to stop a speedy child from eating pesticide-covered produce while selecting the nicest of red peppers doesn't sound like fun to you, then you don't know what fun is!

Oh, and to whoever bought that somewhat soggy mushroom, I apologize. I didn't have time to wipe it off. She'd moved on to the apples by then.

My son just discovered the joys of the bakery department giving out cookies to kids at superstore. I think he loves that woman now...

They've got free cookies at the SuperValu, too (and not just chocolate chip, which I appreciate). Unfortunately, they were out of cookies that day which might explain why Jade wanted to raid the rest of their produce.

Reading the bit about Fort Nelson I was reminded of a line I once heard a stand up comedian use. He asked the check out girl if she thought he was buying enough toilet paper for the amount of food he was buying.

I've always been tempted but never had the nerve to use that line.
