On the Road Again

I just got an exciting call from an old friend, Dennis Deneron, the Chief of the Sambaa K'e Dene Band. Sambaa K'e is commonly known as Trout Lake, Northwest Territories. Now, I know that every province and territory has at least one Trout Lake (including Big Trout Lakes and Little Trout Lakes) but, to me, there is only one true Trout Lake.

I used to work in the community as an Economic Development Officer. One of the many perks of the job was that fishing boats were popular places to hold meetings. Now, I know that there are many places in the world that offer great fishing but, for me, Trout Lake is the only place that offers true fishing. In fact, the fishing at Trout Lake has spoiled me for fishing anywhere else.

I could tell you stories about fishing in Trout Lake, but you wouldn't believe me.

Anyways, the reason Dennis called was to let me know that he's going to be on On the Road Again tomorrow night. I knew that he was going to be on the show - I'm the one who suggested to the producer that they go interview him - I just didn't know when the show was going to be on.

You see, Dennis has been the Chief of Trout Lake since he was 18 - for nearly half of his life! A man of many interests and talents, including performing magic tricks, practicing a traditional lifestyle, and filmmaking, Dennis has been trying to quit being the Chief for as long as I've known him. But, no matter how hard he tries, the community won't let him. Now, how often does that happen?

If you want to learn a little more about Dennis, check out On the Road Again on CBC, October 12th at 7:30pm!

Damn, missed it. But I do love me some "On the Road Again" - my dad was such a huge fan, that when Wayne Rostad was in town a few years ago I got him to autograph my dads birthday card (which my dad LOVED). I felt like such a groupie!!! :)

I'll watch for the re-run!
