While we were out, we saw a lot of animal sign in the snow. There were lynx tracks and hare tracks and a myriad of small rodents. Though a little interpretation may be required, it always amazes me how much those tracks can tell us about the life of an animal. Weave all those tracks together and you've got a fascinating but fleeting record of a story about competition and survival.
Here are a few pictures I took during our snowshoe. What do you read into them?

That reminds me of the tracks I found two winters ago, telling quite a dramatic tale.
First the little ground squirrel was hopping along normally, pitter patter, pitter patter, like a mini-sized rabbit.
Then, suddenly, the track got erratic, going in circles, crossing back over itself.
And then, there were the wing-tip prints...
Is this like a "Rorschach" inkblot test, only with snow? I better not reveal my inner psyche to the world. But, photo#3 has caught my eye, I wonder what animal made those? And,I'm glad the snow was all white, Michael:)
