First the bad news, then the good news...

Jade: First the bad news...
After two days without any drop seizures, Jade had six of them. It was disappointing to see that after two very good days. She was very dehydrated this morning and getting her to eat or drink is a little exhausting (where "little" is a special slang word for "very very very").

Then the good news...
Even with the seizures today, the diet is still working. The seizures are still better than they were.  Jade's language skills have leapt ahead. She has used a few four-word sentences!  She's using words I've never heard her use before in combinations that make sense!  Her coordination has improved and, when she's had something to eat, she's a bundle full of energy.

(As a cute little side story, we need to test the level of ketones in Jade's urine to make sure that she's in ketosis.  Since the diapers are so effective at absorbing the urine, we need to put a couple of cotton balls into her diaper to catch some for the testing stick.  I forgot to put the cotton balls in the other day.  Jade started pointing at her diaper, saying, "Cloud?  Cloud?"She was reminding me to put the cotton balls in her diaper.  "Cloud" is a great name for a cotton ball when you don't know what they're actually called!)

Fawn: First the bad news...
Fawn is upset that she was stuck in the hospital with kidney stones and missed so much of Jade's ketogenic diet induction.

Then the good news...
Fawn stopped having contractions, so Nugget isn't going to arrive early.  Fawn is now up and about, unburdened by the pain of kidney stones (but with sore stomach muscles). She was discharged from the hospital today.

She'll be there tomorrow, for our final day at BC Children's Hospital (at least for this trip).

Meandering Michael: First the bad news...
Michael is tired and cranky and thinks he's coming down with a cold.  He wants a vacation but isn't going to get one.

Then the good news...
His blog readership over the past few days has more than tripled! Ah, nothing attracts spectators like a good disaster (or two)!

Aw! I love the 'cloud' anecdote. It's great that you are seeing progress (and such significant progress at that...) so early on. Just keep swimming! (come on, you're a parent, you MUST get the Nemo reference)

I find it surprising that the ketogenic diet affects the dietee so quickly. I would have thought it would take weeks for any noticeable change to appear. It's wonderful, and I'm so relieved that it seems to be working for Jade! but it also makes me think: how much of what we eat must affect our brain structure and who knows what else.
